At this point in my life, I’d read just about anything from Nalini Singh. Archangel’s Enigma, the eighth full book in her Guild Hunter series, simply solidifies that desire.
This book is just a good book.
Straight up.
For seven books we’ve seen the evolution of these different characters. We’ve watched Elena and Raphael battle their figurative demons as well as go head to head against the intensely overpowered archangel Lijuan. At this point, these characters are pretty well set up and you’re strapped in for the ride because you need to know what happens next. After Archangel’s Shadows, the book that gave us Ashwini and Janvier’s intense and emotional story, we were all like “how is she going to top this?”

Want to throw me out of a story in no time flat?
Include “Period Typical Racism” in a book written after 1989.
(Seriously, I read one Miss Fisher book because it was recommended as a “feminist James Bond” and honestly, I’d’ve preferred to read Fleming’s James Bond books because at least I can go into them knowing that the guy was a racist misogynist.)
The thing about looking at and reinventing older genres like Noir and Gothic fiction, is that you have a duty to reinvent, not rely, on harmful tropes. It’s your job as a writer writing in the twenty-first century to take our century into context. It’s your job to look at what was written years ago and go “no, I won’t do that”.

This snippet is from another original story, one set in a universe similar to our own except for a few minor history changes and the fact that there are beings called EXOs running around. This story is (hopefully) going to be for my submission to The Book Smugglers’ Open Call for short stories ,The theme is ‘Superheroes’ and this story, about an EXO struggling to find her freedom is pretty darn super.
I’m looking forward to finishing it and seeing where it goes.

Grayson #12 is the book that fandom has been waiting for.
A huge issue that many fans and haters alike have commented on has been the distance between Dick and the other members of the Batfamily. Off in Europe for much of the series’ run, Dick has been distanced from his family even as he made new connections with Helena, Tiger, and other members of SPYRAL. When he is in contact with his family members, it’s brief and unsatisfying on all levels.
In Grayson #12 the team finally brings Dick home. At the end of the previous issue Dick, fed up with all the shady subterfuge coming from SPYRAL, sends Bruce one last message telling him that he’s coming home.

Comixology currently has a bunch of Marvel Firsts out for series that I’ve been meaning to check out. Out of the eight books offered in the past four weeks (from Black Widow to She-Hulk to Prince Leia), I got three books that I had wanted to buy. At ninety-nine cents each, they were a steal and I think that even if I didn’t enjoy any of them, it’d still be a good bargain.
But what’s great is that I did like all three of the books I picked up from the sale and I want to talk a bit about that!
No matter what, I am going to see Crimson Peak next month.
I decided this back when the cast was first announced and then when we got those set photos of what looked like a funeral. I love Tom Hiddleston. Love him like I love naps, it’s that intense. And I of course enjoy Guillermo del Toro’s work. He’s a freaking master of horror and tension and his movies always leave me feeling kind of uncomfortable but in a good way.
But here’s the thing about my intense love of del Toro and Hiddleston coming together to put on the Gothic nightmare of my heart: it’s so not diverse in terms of race and I’m not okay with that.Read More »
I’ve wanted to go to grad school since the moment I graduated with my BA back in 2012.
Unfortunately, due to complications (like no real aim or money), my grad school dreams fell by the wayside. I lazed around for a year before getting into education and taking a course to become a teacher — something that I finally realized wasn’t my calling back in April. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, only that I wanted to go back to school. Another history degree (a MA to follow my BA and AA) made the most sense.

The first thing that I want to do whenever I finish a series is to start writing fanfiction for it.
The series could be perfect, full of perfect plot twists and characters that I want to curl up with, but I’ll still feel like cracking open a Word doc and penning a little something for it.

No, there’s not some new comic out that you’re all missing.
This NCBD I only got one book and it was last month’s Jem. I’m not writing about the series just yet because I’m waiting to get the last issue. When I get it, I’m going to do a big post on the comic and how it snuck up on me as a really fantastic read that’s really diverse, girl-focused, and has canon F/F relationships! I watched Jem as a kidlet and even met the actress that played her, but the comic really wasn’t on my radar until a few weeks ago. So I’m really excited that it works for me so darn well!
But for now, I’ve got nothing more than an outline so I’ll hold off on further gushing!
