This October, I’m focusing on young adult books and supernatural fiction!
I’m doing some necessary re-reads for reviewing purposes, diving into some books I haven’t had the time to read, and reading one of my most anticipated reads for Fall 2018. I’m looking forward to getting into these books and talking to y’all about them!
So, what’s on my reading list for October 2018?
First up are the physical books! I tend to read on my kindle more than anything else – partly because I have a bunch of kindles from years of buying them and so I’ve always got one charged – but some books you just have to have in your hand. You know?
Matt Wallace’s Taste of Wrath (Sin du Jour #7) – Amazon
This is the final book in my boy Matt Wallace’s Sin du Jour series. I read this back when it came out and I own a kindle copy too because I’m cool like that. However, I was finishing my thesis and preparing for graduation right around that time so I didn’t get to do my traditional tipsy review of the book. I’m rereading to refresh my memory and then I’ll be sending off my actual favorite urban fantasy series with booze and wailing.
L. L. McKinney’s A Blade So Black – Amazon | Barnes and Noble
From the moment I heard A Blade So Black as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Alice in Wonderland”, I knew I was gonna love this book. Then I read the first couple of pages in a bookstore and I knew I needed it in my life. This is my one birthday gift to myself and one of two books I’m buying in October (unless I find work). I can’t wait to talk about this one with y’all!
Jayd Aït-Kaci and Alex Singer’s Small Town Witch – Hivemill
I’m a huge fan of Jayd and Alex’s work. My friend Noelle got me interested in their webcomic Sfeer Theory ages ago and I just kept up with their amazing skills from there on in. I participated in the Kickstarter campaign for Small Town Witch because it’s 100% My Thing. I mean werewolves, alternate history takes on the 1920s, gorgeous art? They might as well have slapped a huge “Catnip for Stitch” sign across the Kickstarter. I’m rereading this because I’m working on a review and a reclist for books/stories set in or written about Prohibition!
Alexa Donne’s Brightly Burning – Amazon | Barnes and Noble
Alexa was one of the amazing writers that I met at BookNet Fest 2018! There was no way that I was leaving BNF without buying a copy of her debut young adult novel, which she described as “Jane Eyre in space”. First of all, I love Jane Eyre (not as much as I love naps, but kind of high up there) and retellings of classical Western literature are my favorite! And it’s in space?? I’m really looking forward to curling up with some tea and immersing myself in Alexa’s awesome book!
Amanda Foody’s Ace of Shades – Amazon | Barnes and Noble
Back when I had a teeny, tiny bit of disposable income, I used to subscribe to OwlCrate. Foody’s Ace of Shades was one of the books I got! I started reading this right after I moved back in with the Maternal Unit, but life happened hard and I didn’t get a chance to get very far. However, I’ve been thinking about this book for months and I’m going to read the heck out of it this month! In Ace of Shades, teenaged girl sets out to look for her missing mother and winds up in a city of various vices. This was another “hooked from the first page” reads and I’m going to have so much fun with this book! I can just tell!
Hope Nicholson (the editor)’s Gothic Tales of Haunted Love – Amazon | Bedside Press eBook
Gothic Tales of Haunted Love is everything I wanted from the gothic fiction genre after I left my second or third showing of Crimson Peak. Inspired by the gothic romance comics of the not-so-distant past, the creators in this anthology put a new spin to an old genre. Unlike the gothic romance comics of the way back when, these comics focus on women, on queer characters, on characters of color. I think I loved all of the stories in the anthology when I read it first, and I’m rereading it again so I can have some spooky fun in time for Halloween!
Now, let’s just talk about my digital TBR.
Mainly, my digital TBR is made up of books I’m behind on reviewing for NetGalley or [REDACTED], the site I recently started doing reviews for. Those, I tend not to talk about because either I can’t, or I’m embarrassed about how long it’s taken me to get to these books.
But, I’ve got a couple of library holds, a new NetGalley read, and a single pre-order that I’m looking forward to. So let’s go!
Nalini Singh’s Archangel’s Prophecy (Guild Hunter #11) – Amazon | Barnes and Noble
Nalini Singh is hands-down one of my favorite urban fantasy/contemporary paranormal romance writers. Her writing style is so lovely, and she really gets you invested in characters that another writer might make you just want to punch. In this eleventh entry to her stellar Guild Hunter series, we return to Elena and Raphael’s side as the shit hits the fan in a major way. This book is going to be great and at the end of the month, when my tweets devolve to screaming on twitter, that’ll be why.
Kara Barbieri’s White Stag – Amazon | Barnes and Noble (Pre-orders only.)
I just picked this up on NetGalley. Like two days ago. So I haven’t had the time to be embarrassed about how long it’s taking me to review it. While the blurb isn’t entirely my thing (stories about daughters being raised to be the sons their parents always wanted or whatever can be hit or miss), I want to give the book a chance because I really don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to dive into some totally innovative YA fantasy! We’ll see how this goes!
Kat Richardson’s Greywalker (Greywalker #1) – Amazon | Barnes and Noble
I started this September 30th so by the time this post goes up, I’ll be done with this book. I’m reading the first book in this New To Me Urban Fantasy series for Urban Fantasy 101 reasons (I’ve got a guide coming up that’ll focus on characters who work with the dead). Here’s what this series has going for it: it’s complete, has a strong female character as the main character, a fresh narrative voice, and an interesting view of death and what comes after.
Craig Schaefer’s The Neon Boneyard (Daniel Faust #8) – Amazon
The fact that I haven’t been running around shouting Craig Schaefer’s praises is a major misstep on my part. He’s one of my three favorite male authors in the genre and every book I read in his Daniel Faust series is a game-changer. He’s another author I view as #WriterGoals because he’s prolific, dedicated, AND really good at what he does. I already started the audiobook for the book a few days ago, but I’m going to sit down with the kindle copy instead because there’s a fair bit of gore in the first few chapters and I am a baby. But I’m super excited and I’ll be screaming about his work throughout the month!
